Free Pattern: Fall Inspired Table Runner

  Inspired by the changing leaves of fall, this table runner can be made to suit your needs. The finished pattern measures 12"W x 48"L for a smaller coffee or accent table.  Made of 'granny' squares, simply add to or subtract from the number of squares and follow border instructions to change the length.

Materials:
Crochet hook size I/9
Worsted weight acrylic yarn
(I used Red Heart Super Saver)
Color A: Soft Sage
Color B: Pale Yellow
Color C: Coffee
Color D: Pumpkin
Tapestry needle
Stitch markers or safety pins (optional)



Gauge:
In square - 5 tr in one row = 1 1/2" x 1 1/2"
In border - 4 sts x 4 rows = 1" x 1"


Stitches and abbreviations:
Chain (ch)
Slip stitch (sl st)
Single crochet (sc)
Double crochet (dc)
Triple crochet (tr)

Butterfly stitch - Insert hook under row indicated, pull up loop to height of top row. Complete as a single crochet.


Directions for square:

Color A:
Ch 14. Join with a sl st.


Row 1:
Sl st into ring. *Ch 10. Join to ring with a sc. Make 2 sc in ring. Sl st into ring.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Join to beg sl st with a sl st.


Row 2:
*In next available ch-sp, (sl st, ch 1, sc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, tr, ch 1, dc, ch 1, sc, ch 1, sl st). Ch 6.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Join to beg sl st with a sl st.


Row 3:
*Sl st into next st. *Sl st in ch-sp after sc. Ch 3, sl st in ch-sp after dc. Ch 3, sl st in ch-sp after tr. Ch 3, sl st in ch-sp after dc. Ch 8.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Join to beg sl st with a sl st. Bind off, weave in ends.


Row 4: Color B:
With color B, in corner sp, join with a sl st. Ch 4 (counts as dc & ch 1). In same sp make (1 tr, ch 2, 1 tr, ch 1, 1 dc), ch 1. In next ch-3 sp make (1 sc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1sc). Ch 4, butterfly st around ch-sps from previous 2 rows, ch 4. In next ch-3 sp make (1sc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1sc), ch 1. *In corner ch-3 sp make (1dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 2, 1tt, ch 1, 1 dc) ch 1. In next ch-3 sp make ( 1sc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 sc). Ch 4, butterfly st around ch-sps from previous 2 rows, ch 4. 1sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, (1dc, ch 1, 1sc) in same sp. Ch 1.*  Repeat from * to * 2 more times.  Join with a sl st to beg ch-3.


Row 5:
Sl st into ch-1 sp between dc & tr, ch 3. *Sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 3, sl st in same sp, ch 3, sl st in ch-1 sp between tr & dc. Ch 3, sl st in ch-1 sp between dc & sc. Ch 3, sl st into top of dc. Ch 5, sl st in ch-4 sp before butterfly st. Ch 1, sl st into ch-4 sp after butterfly st. Ch 5, sl st into top of dc. Ch 3, sl st in ch-1 sp between sc & dc. Ch 3, (#) sl st in ch-1 sp between dc & tr, ch 3.* Repeat from * to * 2 more times, then from * to # one time. Sl st into beg sl st to join.


Row 6:
Sl st in ch-3 sp. Ch 2 (counts as sc & ch 1), in same sp (dc, ch 1, sc), ch 1. *In corner ch-3 sp make (1dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 2, 1 tr, ch 1, 1dc), ch 1. In next ch-3 sp make (1 sc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 sc), ch 1. In next ch-3 sp make (1dc, ch 1, 1tr, ch 1, 1 dc), skip next ch-3 sp. Ch 11. Skip first ch-3 sp after ch-5. In next ch-3 sp make (1 dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1, 1dc), ch 1 (#) . In next ch-3 sp make (1sc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 sc), ch 1.* repeat from * to * 2 more times. Work from * to # 1 more time. Sl st in beg ch-1. Bind off, weave in ends.


Row 7: Color C:
With color C join in corner ch-2 sp with a sl st. Ch 3 (counts as 1sc & ch 2), 1 sc in same sp. 1 sc in next 2 ch-1 sps. Ch 1, (1sc, ch 1) in next 6 ch-1 sps. Butterfly st around ch-11 from previous row and skipped ch-3 of row 5. Ch 1, butterfly around ch-sp of row 6 and ch-5 of row 5. Ch 1. Butterfly around ch-sp of row 6, ch-5 of row 5, and ch-4 of row 4. Ch 2. Butterfly around ch-sp of row 6, ch-5 of row 5, and 2nd ch-4 of row 4, ch 1.Butterfly around ch-sp of row 6 and ch-5 of row 5, ch 1. Butterfly around ch-sp from previous row and skipped ch-3 of row 5. Ch 1, (1sc, ch 1) in next 5 ch-1 sps, 1 sc in next 2 ch-1 sps. *In corner sp (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc). 1 sc in next 2 ch-1 sps. Row 8:
Sl st into corner ch-sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc). In same sp (1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc). 1 dc in next 2 sc. Ch 3, skip 1 ch-sp, 1 dc in 2nd ch-1 sp. Ch 3, skip 2 ch-1 sps, 1 dc in 3rd ch-sp. Ch 5, 1 dc in ch-1 sp between 2nd and 3rd butterfly st. ch 2, 1 dc in ch-1 sp between 4th and 5th butterfly st, ch 5. 1 dc in ch-1 sp after next sc. Ch 3, skip next 2 ch-1 sps, 1 dc in 3rd ch-1 sp. Ch 3, skip next ch-1 sp, 1 dc in next 2 sc. *In corner sp (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc). 1 dc in next 2 sc. Ch 3, skip 1 ch-sp, 1dc in 2nd ch-1 sp. Ch 3, skip 2 ch-1 sps, 1 dc in 3rd ch-sp. Ch 5, 1 dc in ch-1 sp between 2nd and 3rd butterfly st. ch 2, 1 dc in ch-1 sp between 4th and 5th butterfly st, ch 5. 1dc in ch-1 sp after next sc. Ch 3, skip next 2 ch-1 sps, 1dc in 3rd ch-1 sp. Ch 3, skip next ch-1 sp, 1 dc in next 2 dc.* Repeat from * to * 2 more times, join with a sl st to beg ch-3.


Joining:
Hold squares with right sides together, match corner spaces. It may be helpful to hold squares together with split ring stitch markers or safety pins. Starting one sp to the right of corner post, sl st through back loops only Ch 1. Sc through front loops in each matching st until end of first ch-5 (17 sc). Ch 2, skip ch-2 between tr stitches. Sc in each of next 17 sts. Bind off, weave in ends. Repeat for each square.


Border:
Note: All border stitches are worked in the back loop only except for row 4. If your tension is too tight, edges may tend to curl. 
Row 1:
Join color D with a sl st in corner sp. Ch 1 (counts as sc), 1 sc, ch 2, 2 sc in same sp. For each square joined, work in back loops 1 sc in each st (38) until corner sp. Work 1 sc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, work 1 sc in next square's corner sp. For turning corner-sp make (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc). Repeat until last st, join to beg ch-1 with a sl st. Bind off, weave in ends.
Row 2:
Join color B with a sl st in back loop of st after corner sp. Sl st in each st, in corner sp make (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc). Repeat around. Join with a sl st. Bind off, weave in ends.
Row 3:
Join color C with a sl st in back loop of st after corner sp. Sl st in each st across. Sl st into 1st ch of corner, ch 1, sl st in 2nd ch. Bind off, weave in ends.
Row 4:
Join color A with a sl st in back loop of st after corner sp. Ch 1 (counts as sc), sc in front loop of next st. (Sc in back loop of next st, sc in front loop of next st), repeat around. Join with a sl st to beg ch-1. Bind off, weave in ends.
